How do I clean my percolator?

Follow the directions below for cleaning your percolator:

  1. Wash the basket, stem and cover in hot soapy water with a dishcloth, rinse and dry.
  2. Clean the inside of the percolator by filling with hot water to the 5-cup level. Add a small amount of liquid dishwashing detergent and wash with a dishcloth.
  3. Clean the heating well unit with a scouring pad to remove coffee residue.
  4. Drain, rinse well and dry thoroughly.
Can I use baking soda to clean my percolator? - Do not use baking soda to clean your percolator as baking soda can cause discoloration and pitting.

How do I remove mineral deposits? - Fill the percolator to the 5-cup level with white distilled vinegar. Next, fill the percolator to the maximum cup level with cold water. Place the empty basket and stem into the percolator, cover and plug in. Allow the percolator to complete a perking cycle, then let stand for 15 to 20 minutes. Unplug and drain the percolator. Allow to cool before cleaning with soap and water.

The inside of my percolator is discolored. How can I clean this? - The discoloration is normal, especially if the percolator is used for heating water.

To remove or lighten the discoloration, fill the percolator with cold water to the maximum cup level. Place the stem and basket in place and add 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar to the basket. Cover, plug in and allow to go through a perk cycle. Let stand 15 to 20 minutes. Unplug and drain. Allow to cool before cleaning with soap and water.
